Contest organizers name winning Rotarian Web sites

Rotary’s presence on the Web continues to grow exponentially, with more clubs, districts, and other Rotary-related groups establishing home pages each year. To recognize some of the most user-friendly and best-designed of these Web sites, the International Computer Users Fellowship of Rotarians (ICUFR) and the Fellowship of Rotarians On The Internet (ROTI) sponsored the 2002 Best of the Rotary Web contest. Recently, the two groups announced the winners of this competition, the fifth since its inception.

Roger Siddle of the Rotary Club of Preston Guild, Lancashire, England, who claims to have uploaded the first Rotary-related Web site in June 1994, originated the contest, which showcases the best Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact web sites at the regional, district, and club levels during a given year.

Typically, more than 200 entries are received by a panel of judges comprising webmasters of the best sites from the previous year, as well as members of ICUFR and ROTI. In a preliminary process of elimination, the number of entries is whittled down to the top 10 sites in each of seven winning categories. Then, members of the panel cast their ballots to determine the top winner in each category.

Siddle recently posted the Best of the Rotary Web 2002 contest winners and runners up at www.unofficialrotary.org/best. The following is the list of this year’s best sites:

· Best Rotary/Rotaract regional Web site - Mundo Rotário Brasileiro (www.rotarybrasil.com.br);

· Best Rotary district Web site - District 4530 (http://www.rotary4530.cjb.net/);

· *Best Rotary club Web site - Rotary Club of Erenkoy Istanbul, Turkey (www.rotary-erenkoy.org);

· Best Rotaract district Web site - Rotaract in Yorkshire (www.rotaract.co.uk);

· Best Rotaract club Web site - Rotaract Club of Oxford (www.oxfordrotaract.com);

- Best Interact club Web site - Interact Club of Penafiel, Portugal (www.interactpenafiel.pt.vu); and

“The strength of the contest is that the winners from each year form the panel of judges for the following year,” said Siddle. “The webmasters know they are being judged by their peers, and value success in the contest highly.”

Siddle said there is no prize or award given out to the winners except for the right to plug their site as a contest winner.
