Past RGHF Chairs   Past Boards

2008-2009 Executive Committee

Joseph L. Kagle, Jr., 2007/2008 President, Past History Chairman and RGHF “Peace History” subcommittee coordinator, 2006-2007, www.rghfforum.org, www.peacehistory.org Peace Historian www.rghfpeacejourney.org. Member: Rotary eClub of the Southwest, USA. Arts Management (art museum director for over 40 years), 50 years as Art and Art History Professor, Fulbright Scholar and Senior Specialist (four Fulbright grants- 1966 to 2004). He was awarded the Dartmouth College Class of 1955 Award for Outstanding Achievement and Service in 2006. Appointed to the board in 2006, serving as Vice President in 2007. Honors: Who’s Who in American Art, 1965- , Who’s Who in America, 1980- , Who’s Who in International Art, 1990- , The Arc Volunteer of the Year for USA, 1992, Who’s Who in American Business and Finance, 2003-, and Who’s Who in the World, 2004-  .

Joe Kagle, born May 2, 1932, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, artist, educator, collector, arts/museum consultant, writer and grants specialist. Wife: Anne, married January 19, 1957, retired registered nurse. Children: Samantha, 37, and Christopher Yung Wook, 35. Grandchildren: Erin 8; Matthew 4.

“As a Rotarian for over 36 years (the last 20 with perfect attendance), a little less than half my age, you would think after years of personal and professional travel on World Campus Afloat, Fulbright grants to Taiwan, Republic of Georgia (2) and Mongolia, and academic jobs abroad, your point of view would have been fixed long ago. Not true! In 2006, I joined Rotary eClub of the Southwest, USA (with members all over the world but I was the first Texan, although now there are four from this state) and Rotary Global History Fellowship (with membership from 31 regions in the world). With both these influences, my view has expanded and contracted all in the same instance. I now realize that the world has no borders for ideas, philosophy, history and pursuits for peace. This insight expands my vision of the world to a flat world point of view for information, communications, images and stories. At the same time, from a satellite point of view, it has contracted my vision to viewing the world as a village where one must think of neighbors and their needs as well as my (and my family’s) own. In these two views, our home, the earth, is an ocean of knowledge and personalities and ideas and we fish who love to swim in it view it as one place, one globe and one people. Rotary Global History Fellowship adds greatly to this ocean of knowledge. It is truly “service above self” and “without borders”. Learning to be a Rotarian never seems to end.”

President 2009-10, Treasurer: Geri Appel: Marketing, PP Wichita 30, KS, USA,  2000-2001, Governor D5690 2002-2003, Founding member. Joined the project in November of 2000.  www.1905society.org 2007

"The Mission of Rotary's Global History  Project web site is to recognize and document the histories and current events of the pioneer clubs in what has become the world’s oldest and largest service organization.  'Rotary's rendezvous with destiny' depended on the success of these first 100 clubs.  Without them leading the way and spreading Rotary's vision and message, Rotary would not be what it is today.  These 'mother clubs' of all the other Rotary clubs in the world have much to share with existing and new clubs around the world.  Come on in and visit us!"

2007/08 Board, Secretary 08/09, fellowship coordinator www.rghf.org/fellowship  08/09, & RGHF AMBASSADOR, New Zealand History: Norman R. Winterbottom

A Rotarian since 1970, when he joined the Rotary Club of Auckland East (D-292) Norm Winterbottom has been a member of Glenfield, Devonport (charter member) and Milford clubs (all D-9910) and is currently a member of Katikati (D-9930).

He has served as club secretary, treasurer, bulletin editor, webmaster, public image  and has served for many years on District Committees both as a member and as chairman.

The founder of the Rotary International New Zealand Science & Technology Forum, of which he was the Director for six years, and also RDU Rotary Supplies New Zealand. Norm holds Service awards from District 9920 and the Milford Club.  He is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.  His Classification is “Shipping & Customs.”

"I am a Rotarian because I had the great good fortune to be invited to join the Rotary Club of Auckland East (D-292) in 1970. I had little knowledge of what Rotary was, but very quickly learned the meaning of Rotary’s Fellowship and just how unique it is. I soon found that being involved with others in Service projects is both satisfying, and sometimes humbling.

Rotary has become a way of life.   Rotary has given me precious friendships with people of similar attitudes from all over the world that I should have been the poorer for not having their friendship."

Senior Vice President - RGHF Features, Calum Thomson, CPF, PHF, Major Donor, Benefactor. Transport Management, RC of Longniddry & District, RI D1020 Zone 17. District 1020 Rotary Foundation Grants Officer 2004-07, researcher/writer and History Fellow for Rotary Global History Fellowship since the winter of 2001 Cal is also the coordinator for the conventions and convention host clubs sections. He is also contributing editor for "What Paul Harris Said". He was awarded the "Ches Perry" Fellowship by the Rotary Club of Chicago. Appointed to the board in January of 2004. Elected to the 2004 Board and served as vice-chairman to the 2005-06 Board. Chairman/President 06/07

"Looking at my Pelican History of America's index, I cannot find any references to "Rotary" or "Paul Harris".  I do, incidentally, find the names of some eminent Rotarians such as Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D Roosevelt.
We shall have to find our own history.
Understanding the past is, obviously, important in helping to explain the present. Why, for example, did the movement expand so rapidly? The answer lies with the early pioneers who understood that the "Booster" concept of self interest was flawed and only appropriate for short-term advantage. If the movement could adapt to serve the community both at home and abroad, it would be able to attract men (and women) from every part of the globe.
Rotary has to provide  history as a resource for all of its 30,000 clubs. In the age of the world-wide web, it is so easy for one inaccuracy to spread like a common cold.
Rotary Global History Fellowship (An Internet Project) web site should be a repository of all definitive answers.
Rotarians, the world over, can examine the past and also read of Rotary critics such as G. B. Shaw or H. L. Mencken and realise that in reality, the sternest critics are club members themselves.
So, let us learn from the past and try to live up to those who began these Adventures in Service."

Frank Longoria, Membership/PR Co Chair, RGHF President 2010-11, Director: Frank Longoria joined the Rotary Noon Club in Denton, Texas in the 1980´s and dropped out for a few years.  He rejoined the same club in 1996. Upon his retirement in 1998, he joined the Rotary Noon Club of Marble Falls, Texas. He served as Director of International Service while a member of the Marble Falls Rotary Noon Club.  During this time he worked on several matching grants with sister clubs in Monterrey, Mexico and Ciudad Madero, Mexico.  The last matching grant allowed the purchase of an ambulance for a hospital in Ciudad Madero..  The ambulance was imported successfully. He is presently serving as the Sergeant at Arms for the Rotary eClub of the Southwest.   Frank and his wife, Lucila, were host and hostess for a Rotary Graduate Exchange Student from the Cotswold area in England in 2003.  They later traveled to England to visit with the student and her family.  They have also participated in several Rotary Friendship Exchanges with families from Mexico.

Frank is Professor Emeritus of Foreign Languages, Texas Woman's University, where he taught Spanish and Spanish-American Literature and Linguistics as well as English as a Second Language. He served as the Chairman of the Department of English, Speech, and Foreign Languages and Director of International Programs from 1978 to 1998. He initiated an English Program for students from Japan, and he and his wife visited Japan several times.  Prior to his tenure at TWU, he was a tenured Professor at the University of Texas at Arlington and at The State University of New York in Potsdam, NY: He was named Director of International Programs for the State University of N.Y., and he and his family spent 3 years in Madrid, Spain..  He holds a PhD in Romance Languages and Linguistics with a second specialty in Comparative Literature from the University of Washington

Frank is a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow and a Sustaining Member. His wife, Lucila, is also a Paul Harris Fellow. Frank thinks that the world will be a better place when all wars are considered history.

Tim Tucker, UK RGHF President 2011-12 Member of the Rotary Club of St Ives in Cambridgeshire since autumn 1995.  President 2002-2003.  Paul Harris Fellow.  Other club offices held from 1996 include the Chairs of Community Service, Youth Opportunities, International Service and Membership Service.  Also, three separate years during this time as club Rotaract Officer.  District 1070 Rotaract Officer 2006-2009, and member of D1070 Membership Services Committee.

In 1974 invited to join the Rotaract Club of Epsom prior to club formation in 1975, but only 17 at the time so had to wait a little longer.  Joined the club in 1976.  Over the following ten years held various club positions including Vocational Service Chair, Club Service Chair and Treasurer.  President 1979-1980.  District 114 Vice Chairman 1980-1981.  During the late 1970’s /1980’s District 114 consisted of some 50+ Rotaract clubs.  Past members of the club from my time continue to meet once a year on the Saturday before each Christmas.

A regular browser of RGHF website since early 2002.  Played the recording of Paul Harris from the website to my club at a club meeting in spring 2002.  Also used references from ‘My Road to Rotary’ and other RGHF information in proposing toast to RI and RIBI at my club Charter Celebration in October 2002.  Joined RGHF at the end of 2006 and, rather innocently, suggested that ‘wouldn’t it be good to have a similar History of Rotaract as part of the RGHF website’.

Rotary interests range over all the avenues of service.  In particular for Rotary Clubs to widen the service to their communities and internationally by creating and actively supporting a Rotaract Club involved in a full programme of service and fellowship activities.  Rotaract, as part of the Rotary Family, compliments the achievements of Rotary.

The past 40 years of The History of Rotaract is waiting to be brought together in one place for the benefit of everyone with an interest in the history and future of the Rotary Family.

History is our future.  We learn from the past. We take the best from what has happened before and use this to influence the actions we take now.

"I hope this archive is an inspiration to all who visit. Many people have labored to bring you all of this rich history. This was also a personal labor of love. The items below, and the creation of this website are something for which I'll always be grateful.  This archive is posted solely for the protection of this valuable information and is not affiliated with any Rotary Club, Rotary International or Rotarian. My own valuable archives, books and memorabilia, collected from over 28 years in Rotary, are now part of the archives of the Rotary Club of Chicago, Rotary's founding club. Much of that is represented in the list of my personal contributions below. I could not have done this without the support of the original founders and the many other Rotarians who have since taken up the project. The work stands for itself and is a lasting tribute to Paul Harris, the founder of all of this."  Also see "Why I am a Rotarian."

Claudia Beatriz Simó Velázquez, Dominican Republic, member: Santo Domingo Bella Vista, D4060.

Ever since I was a child I felt the call to serve others regardless of race, creed or social status. I realized that I could serve under any circumstances and in any place. Since my teenage years I have volunteered my time and service in a number of foundations mainly directed towards the attention of children at the primary-school level.

It was my mother that motivated me to join the Rotary 2007. She is also a Rotarian. So now I serve along side my mother and the rest of the Santo Domingo Bella Vista Club of the Dominican Republic. Through the Rotary I have found valuable allies in each of my colleagues who serve with equal devotion and heart towards common purposes, "expanding our efforts to anyone who needs a hand and comfort". The Rotary is a lifestyle in my point of view. One that sets an example for each of its members as it has positively shaped the lives of my colleagues, my mother and my own life by being a part of this wonderful organization.

Even though my degree is in the field of interior design, I have dedicated my professional efforts to education and social service. My specialization is in Montessori Education and Learning Difficulties
I am the Director and owner of Noah's Ark School in Santo Domingo. I also offer volunteer assistance as an educational therapist in the "Centro de Vida y Familia" also in the Dominican Republic.
For me the profound function of the Rotary it is the intangible reward of satisfaction that you receive every time you see that your efforts have touched the life of a fellow member of your community and the world.

In that time, he as “sailed” to many of the places visited by Paul and Jean Harris. Having read all of their travels in the “Peregrinations” he is prepared to write a perspective of Rotary/travel then and now. An insight into the world of Paul Harris from 70 some years later. If he attends next year’s convention it will be by boat to an area of the world which Harris visited in 1932.
